Icheon, located in southeast Gyeonggi-do Province, is an entrancing and rustic city surrounded by rugged mountains and extensive plain. Icheon, promoted to the city status in 1996, is facing Yeoju to the east, Yongin to the west, Gwangju to the north, and Eumseong to the south. It occupies an area of 461 square kilometer, which consists of 4.5% of Gyeonggi Province. The population of the city is around 198,232 with 2 towns, 8 subcounties and 4 dongs as of August, 2007.
Icheon is the center region of Korea, 27km long east to west and 36km long north to south and shaped like a small gourd. The low hills of the Kwangju Mountain are scattered around the city and the tributaries of the rivers Namhan, Bokha, Songgok, and Chungmi flow into the region creating a small floodplain. The fertile soil with well-irrigated fields makes the region excellent for rice farming.
Influenced by a typical continental climate, Icheon especially has a huge temperature gap of the summer and the winter due to the heavy climatic extremity, indicating 11.6¡É of its yearly mean temperature. The average in January is -3.1¡É, and the average in August is 24.8¡É. Looking at the rainfall, it was 1,303mm averagely.
Icheon is a vital transportation hub, where the Jungbu Expressway connects the south and north regions of the peninsula and also intersects with the Yeongdong Expressway, which traverses the east and west of the nation. Also, National Highway number 3 and 42 link Seoul to Chungju, and Suwon to Yeoju, respectively.
Icheon is also renowned for its world-class Icheon rice and high quality white peaches that are exceptionally sweet and large. The City has maintained its reputation as the world's center of ceramic arts and industry, with its traditional Korean ceramic products made of Icheon's rich soil and fire. Icheon artisans' souls are keeping their proud tradition which has endured for over a thousand years.
Also with its natural hot springs surrounded by Seolbong Mountain and Dodeuram Mountain, Icheon is regarded as a best place to be, by tourists and investors alike, and also a best city for businesses, retirement living, tourism and leisure.
It is a place of lots of history and festivals, including Yongweol Temple, Seolbong Festival, Icheon New Rice Crop Festival and Icheon Care Festivals. Also, it hosted the International Ceramic Ware Expo 2001.
Icheon is home to IT-related manufacturing as Hynix Semiconductor located in here. In 2006 alone, Icheon¡¯s trade volume recorded US$15,862 Mil., with US$8,482Mil., in export and US$7,380Mil., in import.
