Yeoju, located in an hour southeast of Seoul, is adjoining with Wonju to the east, and Icheon to the west, and Yangpyeong to the north, and Eumseong to the south. It occupies an area of 608 square kilometer, which makes up of 5.97% of the whole territory of Gyeonggi Province. The Yeoju has the population of 105,022 and is divided into 1 town and 9 subcounties as of July, 2007.

In Yeoju, there is the Dang Mountain and the Gwanmo Mountain at the east and the Okap Mountain at the northern part. These are forming a valley in an oval shape in the middle. Yeoju is located in the southeast from Seoul and is developed around the upper reaches of Namhan River, which is one of the largest tributaries of Han River. Agriculture and industries were developed around the Namahan River and the water of Namahan River has been used for agricultural water and people took the Namahan River valley as the grounds of living. Especially, Yeoju rice, which is cultivated with clean water, warm sunlight, and fertile soil, has garnered a reputation as a best-tasting rice in Korea since rice and water of Yeoju presented to the king in the Joseon dynasty.

The yearly mean temperature is 11.6¡É, the average in January is £­3.1¡É, and the average in August is 24.8¡É. The average amount of precipitation over the year is 1,531.8mm.

Yeoju is also located in the center of the metropolitan area with 2 expressway routes. One is Youngdong Expressway and another is Jungbu Inland Expressway. These are providing convenient accesses to the county from every direction in Korea.

As of December 2005, the number of companies registered in Yeoju was 6,572 with 27,880 employees. Especially, globally recognized enterprises like KCC, Coca Cola and Korea Delphi Automotive System Co., are the main contributors of Yeoju¡¯s economic growth. Yeoju is the leading center for the preservation and exhibition of traditional Korean pottery including celadon porcelain, white clay porcelain, Buncheong. The Yeoju ceramic village consists of over 600 ceramic factories concentrated in the villages of Yeoju-eub and Buknae-myeon. Moreover, recent opening of Shinsegae Chelsea¡¯s premium outlet mall, which sells luxurious goods at a discounted price, makes Yeoju¡¯s economy more vibrant.

Yeoju is also a town laden with historical significance and closely linked to some of Korea¡¯s most beloved royal figures. Among them, there are eight queens of Joseon Dynasty including the famous Empress Myeongseong. Also the tombs of King Hyojong and King Sejong are in Yeoju. These famous royal tombs, the county¡¯s tapestry unfolds against a magnificent backdrop of rice fields, pine forest and mountains. The tomb and museum on the grounds are a testament to King Sejong¡¯s greatness, his many achievements, including the invention of Korean character, rain gauge, and sundial. The tomb also serves as an excellent example of a traditional Korean royal tomb.
