Yangpyeong, center of the Korean peninsular, is bordering with Namyangju and Gwangju to the west, Hongcheon and Gapyeong to the north, Yeoju to the south, and Hengseong and Wonju to the east. It occupies an area of 877.78 square kilometer, which consists of 8.6% of the whole territory of Gyeonggi Province. The population of the city is 86,137 with 34,641 households as of Dec., 2006.
Influenced by a typical continental climate, Yangpyeong especially has a huge temperature gap of the summer and the winter due to the heavy climatic extremity, indicating 11.3¡É of its yearly mean temperature. The average in January is -3.6¡É, and the average in August is 24.5¡É. Looking at the average yearly amount of rainfall, it was 1,732.6mm, one of the downpour areas in Korea, and is concentrated in summer.
The rugged Gwanju Mountain stretches east to west along the north side of Yangpyeong. Noted mountains such as Yongmun Mountain (1,157m in height), and Hwaya Mountain are distributed on the northern mountain places. North Han River and South Han River, taking their source from Geumkang Mountain and Daeduk Mountain, respectively, run through Yangyang and meets at Yangsu-ri Dumulmeori, and flow into Seoul, the capital of Korea.
Yangpyeong is widely known as the county of four seasons festivals, sightseeing and events; In the spring when Sansuyu tress are in full bloom with white flowers, Yangpyeong holds the Sansuyu Festival. In the summer, there is the Friends of Water Festival, which is an environment-friendly art festival to preserve and improve the environment through cultural art. One of the key festivals offered during autumn is the Great Gingko Tree Festival at Mr. Yongmun tourist resort, which is held just when the leaves of Gingko trees start to turn yellow. Yangpyeong holds the Hwaedonghwaje (Donghwataeugi) on Jan. 15th by burning the piled straws to wish for the peace and farming of the village. |
